A deceased Covid-19 patient taken on a bicycle for burial

A 71-year-old laborer residing in Karnataka’s Belagavi district had been suffering from fever since more than three days, on being taken to the local private clinic, the doctor advised him to seek admission to a government-appointed Covid-19 hospital in the district.

According to the man’s son despite several requests for help, the local authorities didn’t come to his assistance.

He died on Sunday, no relatives or neighbors came to help them when the word spread regarding his death which was caused due to Covid-19.

On contacting the officials of Gram Panchayat and the health department for the transporting of the body, there was no response.

Left with no other alternative the man’s son and nephew had to carry the deceased’s body on a cycle from the Gandhinagar area of Kittur to a graveyard near Muggut Khan Hubbali village, which was two kilometers away. 

After a video of them carrying the body went viral, Ramesh Jarkiholi, the minister in charge of Belgavi district expressed regret and assured that an incident like this would not repeat again, emphasizing the “dignified cremation or burial of the Covid-19 patients”.
