West Bengal records new 3-digit low in number of Covid cases at 885 since March

In what is being seen as cause to rejoice, the number of new Covid cases in Bengal slipped to a three-digit figure on Monday for the first time in more than three months. Fresh cases in the city of Kolkata have slid to double-digits.

The state recorded 885 new cases while Kolkata clocked 64 cases, on Monday. Health experts believe that the Covid situation in Bengal in under control, but have also warned that the guard against it must be kept up indefinitely.

Anirban Dalui, public health specialist at Swasthya Bhawan, said that it is satisfying to see the number of cases decline in the state and in the city, as it shows that the spread of infection is under control. However, he also said that this unlocking phase is crucial and everyone must follow safety precautions all the time to ensure that the numbers do not go up again.

Bengal recorded fresh cases in three digits for the last time on March 31, with 982 cases and 2 deaths. For Kolkata, fresh cases had been in the double-digits for the last time on March 19, with 99 cases and no deaths. But unfortunately, the number had started rising after Holi.

Infectious diseases control specialist Debkishore Gupta stated that the Covid restrictions have worked along wih the vaccination drive. Due to the magnitude of the second wave, it seems that people were more aware and careful, and followed the rules better.

The slowdown in the number of cases started right after the state government enforced Covid restrictions across the state and the number dropped to four-digits after two weeks. It has been in the 1000 plus mark for the past two weeks.

While all districts, including Kolkata have started reporting cases in double or single digits, North 24 Parganas had 109 cases on Monday, a number Health officials hope will go down soon.
