Water supply reduced in Delhi due to high ammonia concentration

Water supply in parts of Delhi is hit by a rise in the ammonia levels in the raw water discharged from Haryana on Monday, said by Vice Chairman, Delhi Jal Board (DJB), Raghav Chadha. Haryana had opened gates of drains that had stagnant water with a high pollutant concentration, following heavy rainfall.

On Friday, due to the high level of pollutants in the Yamuna river, the DJB had reduced supply at the Wazirabad, Okhla, and Chandrawal water treatment plants. The plants will not be closed but have reduced efficiency so that the ammonia in the water can be treated. Ammonia concentration in water should ideally be around 0.8 ppm but it is currently around 2 ppm.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) appointed Yamuna Monitoring Committee (YMC) has sought a report from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), and industries commissioner on the reasons behind a “sudden froth” in the river.
