Two villages in Odisha first to get Tsunami-ready certificate in India

Venkatraipur village in Ganjam district and Noliasahi village in Jagatsinpur district, two Odisha villages will be first in the country to get a Tsunami-ready certificate, which will help coastal areas to prepare to minimize damage to life and property in the event of a tsunami. Said by officials of Odisha State Disaster Management Authority, the state government body responsible for managing different kinds of disaster. These villages have achieved the distinction of Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) recognition as a tsunami ready in India.

Satya Ranjan Sahoo, Chief General Manager of OSDMA said – “As these two villages have fulfilled the 11 parameters of being Tsunami-Ready, the local communities of these two villages would get a certificate of recognition from UNESCO through a virtual event on 7th August, Friday afternoon. Officials of the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System secretariat in Australia and the Indian Ocean Tsunami Information Centre at Jakarta along with the National Disaster Management Authority would be present during the event.”
