A person named Umapati, who hails from Kolar, Karnataka, got married to not one but two women in real life. The wedding took place at Kurudumale Temple in Mulbagal in Kolar district.

The wedding took place on May 7 and a video of the ceremony went viral on Saturday. The reason for this illegal bigamy was a condition laid by Lalitha, Umapati originally proposed to marry.

Lalitha was conditioned to marry her sister, who is unable to speak, as reported by Bangalore Mirror. Finally, the bridegroom’s family agreed to the proposal. However, the decision did not go in his favor when the video went viral.

The police swung into action and arrested Umapati, as one of the brides is a minor. For the unaware, this practice was not the first time in the family, the bride’s father Nagarajappa also married two siblings (Ranimma and Subbamma) at the same place, as one of his sisters was suffering from speech impairment.

Such incidents came to light in 2019, in which a man married two women, who were cousins, in the same wedding ceremony in the Bhind district of Madhya Pradesh. Surprising to all is that a 35-year-old man remarried his wife and was then tied to the same marriage with his cousin.

Marriage is a serious offense under the Hindu Marriage Act (Section 494, IPC), and a second marriage is not considered legal unless you divorce your first wife.
