Punganur cow a sign of extinction

Punganur a dwarf cattle which weighs around 115-200kg and its average height is 70-90cm. People find it very attractive but the sad thing about it is, its on the verge of extinction.

With some 60 odd remainings. it is believed that the reason for their extinction is the Indian Government, 2013 objective. Which says bettering or enhancing the Indian Cattle breeds with Holstein- Friesian and Jersey cattle traits from the developed countries.

Further, they wanted to ban the rearing of native bull breeds. Punganur cow originated in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh. The specialties are wide.

Digging more into the details of the cow, its milk contains a high amount of fats that is about 8% and rich medicinal properties. While an average cow holds 3 to 3.5% of fats in its milk.

Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams has about 200 Punganur cows. The ghee prepared from the milk of these cows is is being used in offering for lord Venkateswara.

The cow has an average milk yield of 3 to 5 Litres and intake of about 5kgs.
