Law against triple talaq saved families of thousands of Muslim women from breaking-up in UP, says PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday that the ban on triple talaq had saved the families of thousands of Muslim women in Uttar Pradesh from dissolution. Addressing an election rally in Kanpur Dehat, the prime minister said that the state’s tightening of law and order has also benefited Muslim girls, who previously faced problems from miscreants on their way to school.

PM Modi’s remarks at the rally come in the midst of a controversy in Karnataka, where schools have barred Muslim girls from attending classes while wearing a hijab.On Friday, the second phase of the UP assembly elections was held. Voting for Kanpur Dehat, on the other hand, will take place in a later phase.

In justifying the legislation against triple talaq, the prime minister cited the harm done to Muslim women as a result of the practice.

“If a Muslim girl returned from her maika (native home) empty-handed, she was immediately sentenced to triple talaq.” If she did not bring a motorcycle, gold chain, watch, or mobile phone, she was given triple talaq. Triple talaq had essentially destroyed the lives of Muslim women.

According to a report, the prime minister stated that after the anti-triple talaq law was passed, the homes of thousands of daughters in Uttar Pradesh were saved from disintegration. In 2019, the Centre passed a law prohibiting triple talaq.

He praised the Uttar Pradesh government for instilling fear in the minds of miscreants, goons, and rioters, claiming that this has increased the confidence of girls in the state. He slammed the Samajwadi Party, claiming that during their rule in the state, they distributed areas among family members for “loot.”

Modi asked the people if they wanted to vote for a party that would establish “mafia ganj” in every district of the state.The rally of the Prime Minister covered ten assembly constituencies in Kanpur, Kanpur Dehat, and Jalaun districts. Modi also mentioned Kanpur Dehat as the home of President Ram Nath Kovind.
