According to a defence official, the weapon system is being developed for the Indian Navy by the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO)”The system has been designed to enhance anti-submarine warfare capability far beyond the conventional range of the torpedo,” the DRDO said in a statement.

The country successfully flight-tested an indigenously developed helicopter-launched stand-off anti-tank (SANT) missile in Rajasthan’s Pokhran firing ranges on Saturday. The defence ministry said the flight testing, conducted by DRDO and the Indian Air Force (IAF), was “successful” in meeting all of the missile’s mission objectives, and that the weapon, developed for the IAF, can neutralise targets at a range of up to 10 km.

Prior to this, a three-day series of successful test-firings of the Extended Range Pinaka rocket system (Pinaka-ER) were conducted. The system, according to the official statement, is a next-generation missile-based standoff torpedo delivery system. The missile’s full range capability was successfully demonstrated. The system is intended to improve anti-submarine warfare capability far beyond the traditional range of torpedoes.

According to DRDO, the missile is launched from a ground mobile launcher and can cover a wide range of distances. It also says, “This canister-based missile system consists of advanced technologies such as two-stage solid propulsion, electro-mechanical actuators, and precision inertial navigation.”

SMART employs advanced technologies such as two-stage solid propulsion, electromechanical actuators, and precision inertial navigation, which is a self-contained navigation technique in which measurements are used to track an object’s position and orientation relative to known parameters. The missile can travel a long distance when launched from a ground mobile launcher.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the DRDO scientists and other stakeholders for this achievement.Dr G Satheesh Reddy, Chairman of DRDO, said that SMART is a game changer technology demonstration in Anti-Submarine Warfare.Congratulations to all the citizens !!
