GOOGLE’S PROJECT: WORLD A SAFER PLACE

Mr. Sundar Pichai revealed google’s next project is Earthquake detection with submarine cables. They have recently conducted experiments employing “subsea fiber optic ” cables ; results prove that this could potentially be used for tsunami and earthquake detection and warning.

Optical fibers have been used traditionally as sensors ,these techniques are effective only till 100km. Google claims to have developed a technique which will work over thousands of kilometers. The previous approaches demanded special sensing fiber but Google is using their global network of undersea cables that connect far flung continents and are present in the ocean floor. Data in these cables travel at 204,190 kilometers per second.
