‘Eating disorders’ common today, are you suffering too?

Eating disorders have become common in today’s technologically advanced world. Popularly known as ‘Pica’. People with the disorder, compulsively eat items that have no nutritional value. Or they might eat potentially dangerous items like flakes of dried plants, pieces of metals, chalk, sand, etc. 

Victims:

The disorder occurs most often in children and pregnant women. It’s usually temporary. It is advisable to see your doctor right away if you or your child can’t help but eat non-food items. 

People with intellectual disabilities also become victims of ‘Pica’. People with ‘Pica’, are found to be eating usually:-
*Sand 
*Chalk and slate pencils 
* The unused remainder of cigarettes 

Side effects of eating sand:

Individuals could expose themselves to serious infections and medical conditions. Commonly they are – 

  1. Parasitic infestations
  2. Ulcers 
  3. Intestinal obstructions 
  4. Tooth abrasions 
Side effects of eating chalk:
  1. Tooth damage, cavities 
  2. Digestive difficulties
  3. Constipation 
  4. Lead poisoning 
  5. Loss of appetite 
Causes:

There is no single cause of ‘Pica’. In some cases, a deficiency of iron, zinc, or another nutrient may be associated with ‘Pica’. Mostly, Calcium deficiency leads to the eating of chalks and slate pencils. Our unusual cravings may be a sign that our body is trying to replenish low nutrient levels.
