Cyber crime, the increasing threat for India
Last year in 2020, 50035 cyber crimes took place which is even more than 2019. In 2019 the number was 44546 and in 2018 it was 27248. The number of cyber crime cases has been increasing every year.
The highest cyber crime cases were recorded in Uttar Pradesh with 11097 cases, followed by Karnataka with 10741 cases. The lowest number was recorded in Delhi (168) and in Uttarakhand (243).
And its been observed that the rates of cyber crime against women and children was more in lockdown. Because of online lectures and lockdown, children had no other fun but the social media and then they became the easy target. Women specially housewives were prone to social media also became the easy target. Men did get targeted but the number of women and children are more. Also online harassment did increase against women.
But what caused cyber crime?
• Exploiting unauthorized products
Hackers like exploiting privacy if people. Weak internet security gives them opportunity to enter your privacy. Email and links from the unknown person is always risky.
• Access to internet
The internet is easily accessible to everyone. Anyone from anywhere can avail the benefit, but some use it to give rise to the cyber crime. Since the internet is easily available, it becomes easy for the Hackers to sneak into your privacy.
• Unemployment
Unemployment leads people to the wrong path. People expert and having about hacking but yet jobless tends to take the wrong path like cyber crime to earn for their living and satisfy their daily desires.
• Covid 19
In Covid 19 the number of cyber crime cases increased as compared to 2019. More women and children were victimized as they were prone to social media more.
The ministry of affairs has provided the financial assistant to all the states and UTIs under cyber crime prevention against women and children (CCPMC) scheme to support their efforts for setting up cyber forensic-cum-training laboratories which is commissioned in 18 states.
And for hiring center (14C) and has launched cyber crime reporting portal www.cybercrime.gov.in and toll free number 155260 to report the cyber crime.
In November 2021 166 cases were recorded. In Hyderabad 32 cases were recorded and 16 were arrested for fake bank call Centre racket. In September 2021 Goa cops bust fake call center, arrested 13 from different states for duping US citizens.
However, crime fell by 40 percent in first half of 2021 as compared to last year. Only 100 cases were recorded.But it’s also our responsibility to be alert and to take quick action in case of cyber crime. Don’t open email from unrecognized person and also don’t browse suspicious links.
