The Aam Aadmi Party government in Delhi, had around two months back indicated a new excise policy was being prepared while also seeking suggestions from citizens. Delhi’s new excise policy could increase duty on liquor and reform the process for grant of license for liquor.

The new excise policy is likely to introduce many changes in terms of issuing license for both government-run and private liquor shops in Delhi. The proposal of lowering the drinking age had been opposed by the other parties in Delhi. However, the government appears to be firm on its decision.

According to sources, the Delhi Government has planned to bring some changes in the excise policy some of which are- changes in the number of dry days, lowering the age of drinking to 21, and 700-800 liquor shops to be set up in Delhi. Moreover, increasing the Government’s revenue by pushing prices of both Indian and foreign liquor up to 50 percent in order to earn an estimated Rs.8,000 crore against the present Rs.5,000 crore, has been planned by the Delhi Government.
