Lack of organic solidarity: lack of awareness

November 11, 2020 By India People Blog

Since the pandemic had stepped in our nation, it had been quite challenging for some sections of our society, to keep body and soul together. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement of the world’s harshest lockdown at just four hours’ notice on March 24, had perpetrated an unspeakable migrant crisis. Millions were forced to walk hundreds of miles or hitch rides to return home. Many died on the way.
The lockdown has severely impacted migrants, several of whom lost their jobs due to shutting of industries and were stranded outside their native places, waiting to get back. According to economists, lack of ‘organic solidarity’ or in simple terms, lack of unity among groups regarding a clear goal, usually leads to diverse range of interests among individuals. In order to be specific, every individual constitutes the society. Thus interest of every individual forms the interest of the society as a whole.
The most important thing is that, the society needs to change its way of thinking. For instance, in the urban areas, women domestic workers are employed in the lowest rungs of the labour market. New unions are targeting women workers, formulating a set of demands that address urgent concerns in their work places and work lives. Had it been so, that equal opportunities were provided to every community, our nation might not have been in an economic crisis due to the pandemic. Firstly, the society needs to set clear goals about what is wanted by it, thus designing strategies to achieve those goals. Cooperation is the key to survival. This is the message that the Indian Prime Minister seems to have conveyed with his decision to initiate a video conference among leaders of the countries that constitute the SAARC. Had Mr. Modi’s principles not fallen on the proverbial deaf ear in some instances, it might be that we could have defeated the adversity faster, than compared to other nations.
